The Good, The Bad & The Inspirational

Below are the updates of entrants and trainers from the 2011 series 8. Some are short, some are long, we just post up whatever gets sent in, so scroll down and pick and choose a few to have a read of at as they will give you a good idea of what entrants got up to and how they felt throughout the journey.

Wendy’s 10 km Walk

Well I never would have thought I’d do a 10km walk/run and finish it in a good time of 1hr 29mins so very pleased with myself. Feeling a bit sore, but still managed to go off to the gym at 6am this morning. Wendy (far left, is trained by Roger (middle) and that’s Jo Lean on the far right.

300m, Slips & Electric Fences

Just a wee update, a good week of biking and walking, a year older, and I actually decided and ordered my bike. Yay.

Off for a wee walk today with my sister just up the hill at the back of my parents place in Puketahi Street, the Power Pole Track, which goes up to 300m altitude and past a substation (my brother in law suggested it). It was a gravel road, then an old dozer track, it was a great walk up, stopping occasionally to take in the views which were fantastic, finally we reached the top and were greeted with a smelly chamois head on the fence.

We then thought it would be too boring and easy to go back the way we came, so decided to decend towards Kaiata on the old dozer track. We phoned my sisters husband to ask where the track was and what it was like, he said it’s rough, don’t do it, we chose not to listen to this sound advice.

We set off, the track was fine, a little slippery (nothing like the mud run lol), until the old dozer track ran out! and we had to bush bash the rest of the way, we mainly slipped and skidded down what appeared to be a water race which was dry but very slippery. We weren’t sure a few times how we were going to get down as it was very steep and slippery. I grabbed a tree and was edging down, then lost my footing, slipped and was dangling by my arm, it’s darn sore now. Further down my sisters knee started locking up. We did decide on the way down we probably should have listened to my sisters husband, as it wasn’t a track at all, and was a very hit and miss shimmy down the hill, we also decided it would have been a good idea to bring some food with us, I mentioned Em’s power cookies and my sister had heard of them too.

We finally got to the end and met an electric fence with cows in the paddock (which we had seen from above), we had to crawl under some scrub to get to a hole in the fence to enter the paddock, then precariously walked/jogged towards the road for fear of a mad cow chasing us (spot the townies). Thankfully the cows weren’t on a chasing mission today and we made it to the end. What an adventure, it was fun, we wouldn’t come down that way again, but nevertheless it was way out of our comfort zones and a thrill.

I would never have contemplated doing any of this stuff before the challenge, and are absolutely thrilled with the new experiences I have had on this journey, I’ve gained so much more confidence in my ability and now seek out adventure. My legs aren’t even sore after today’s escapade, so the training I’ve been doing must be paying off. Deb is trained by Michelle from BodyWorx.

Deb & Glenys Get Muddy

Mud run was fantastic fun, even with the hangover of all hangovers (I haven’t been out drinking for 3 years due to pregnancy/breastfeeding and went to a cocktail party last night!) wasn’t the best planning, however Glenys and I really enjoyed it, lots of laughter and choice words. Glenys will send in the update and the pics.

Also I have completed the Ironman Challenge with Kerrie De Haan, we done half the distances each, and have each completed our halves of the distances. Deb is trained by Michelle and Glenys is trained by Charlotte and both trainers are from Bodyworx in Hokitika and Kerrie is trained by Michelle Edwards in Christchurch.

James

I have now run my 10km race and have lost 10 kgs. Claudia is now keeping my feet on the ground when I want to enter the next half-marathon available. She is good at keeping it practical and getting there through small steps. James is trained by Claudia Disney.

Racey Goes to 1000 Metres

Update 1: Great start to my altitude challenge today 495 meters from Zeros (Coffee Shop) to the Trig Sight at the top of Sugarloaf, I took along an extra 10 Kg in my pack to make things interesting and to score those bonus meters. Next leg tomorrow.

Update 2: Zeros to the Takahe that’s another 200 meters on my total. Hips and legs fine but shoulders getting a bit sore, that 10kg seemed a lot heavier today.

Update 3: “1000 METERS”. The final leg last night Zeros to Victoria Park 305 meters, I can finally dump that 10 Kg from my bag what a relief. It was amazing to see just what a difference it made, what was before a enjoyable walk became a bit of a struggle.

The best bit: Next time I will read the whole challenge properly as and individual I only had to walk 250 which I found out the next day but as they say no gain without sacrifice the extra effort was well worth it.

Congratulations to all who completed the challenge. Dave. Dave (Racey) is trained by Cate Grace. That’s Dave in the photo with Riwai behind him doing a circuit at Zest.

Dave Hikes 13km in the Snow!

My how time flies, here’s what I’ve been up to – I haven’t missed a session with Dwayne 3 X times per week for the last 18 weeks (before the earthquake I was following a similar schedule) I have also been making use of the great facilities at City Fitness, I have my favourite bike for the ride class and me and the bike know just what’s required. In an effort to shed the final pounds I have adjusted my nutrition to get a bit more protein and also I’m drinking more water. I’ve done the altitude challenge wearing a 17kg weight vest and walked 13km in heavy snow to get to my daughters house because I couldn’t get my car out of the garage.

At the moment I’m reviewing all the newsletters again and extracting every last drop of encouragement and information out of them and noting where I picked up my ‘catch credits’ from. Strangely enough now we are so close I don’t want the competition to end it’s been so helpful felling that I’m part of something bigger than myself and that all around NZ people are making huge changes in their lifestyles. I am feeling confident that I will reach my goals because I’ve done all the hard work and finally feel that everything and I mean everything has fallen in to place. It seems like this update is all about me and I suppose most of it should be but once again I’d like to wish my fellow competitors all the best and hope to meet you when you come to Christchurch for the Awards night. Dave is trained by Dwayne Thomas

The Good, The Bad and the Inspirational.

Our West Coaster’s Conversations!

DEB ” Wow my first 3km run tonight, felt great after I got my breath back.”

GLENYS “That is just so good to hear. I have never run in my life and never ever thought I would. Now at 54 yrs old, I have started. Ran 5ks yesterday, but with occassional short walks to get my breath. I keep telling myself it will only get better. I can manage 2ks on the treadmill without stopping, so I guess there is hope. Well done Deb, you are an inspiration.”

GLENYS Ooops…nearly forgot the Sue Slim’s Step Challange. Has been a busy week, and the weather has been awful. Hard to get out and do things, but there has always been the Gym as a backup. My hubby said he would do the Step Challange too so that was great. His support all through this journey has been amazing. It certainly wasn’t a walk in the park. Our step measured 22cm and I completed it in 13mins 28sec. Paul done it in 16mins 43sec. So not long to go new everyone. Got the Greymouth Mighty Mud Challange next Sunday with Deb and then its off to buy a new dress for the awards. Have a good week and keep smiling.

Deb is trained by Michelle from Bodyworx and Glenys is trained by Charlotte from Bodyworx.

Amanda’s Amazing 100km

Only 20km to go and my 100 is done! Butt is sore and my legs want to leave me! My head though is so pleased and although it’s been a tough week I’m glad I did it. Really need to get a saddle that fits me properly. Hope everyones sprint to the finish is going well. Give it all you got guys Xa. Amanda is trained by Bronwyn Adams Hooper

Nicola’s Daily Run

Completed my weekly challenge to run 4km a day! So started again today, children on bikes with mum running beside. Great! Nicola is trained by Elly McGuiness

Alison’s Glass Overflows

Glass half full or half empty? Went for a run yesterday and after 61/2 km walked the last two home. Drink bottle had leaked all down my back, knee and foot were both hurting, it was getting really cold and the legs just would not keep up to my husband. However, sitting the spa, decided it had been a beautiful day, I had had 1 1/4 hours exercise and 6 km was way more than I could run at the 20 week start – so the glass is over half full. Out for another run tomorrow – maybe I’ll make that 10km again. Will make 21 km my goal for the week. Alison is trained by Bronwyn Adams Hooper

Wendy’s Walks & Workouts

Great work out with the team at Zeal this morning, Roger, Jo Lean and Wendy!!! Only 4 weeks to go WOW!!!

My hubby and I just finish doing a practise walk of the 10km this morning, did it in 1hour 38 min. In readness for next weeks 14 August event. Very sore feet and legs hope I can walk tomorrow!!!! Wendy is trained by Roger Symes

Helen goes Public

I’ve not done too well recently and when I do well I keep a journal (it is currently packed in a box waiting to be moved house) so I decided to go public….30daysleftof30weeks.blogspot.com…no slacking now. Helen is trained by Natasha Guy

Liz’s BHAGS

Managed to complete my 16 week goal and wow I’m sore. My goal was to run for 90 mins and when I started my run I thought today’s the day. Once I sorted out my shorts from falling it down there was no looking back. Now onto my 20 week goal. Bring it on!!!!

Liz is now training for the Auckland Marathon on October 30th and is roping in the other entrants! We call these post competition goals BHAGS! Big Hairy Audacious Goals which you can read more about in the book “Fighting Globesity” Liz is trained by Jean Scott.

Dave & Dwayne

Getting excited and a bit anxious now : )

I’m training well and enjoying the ‘text’ challenges from Dwayne. My main focus is ‘radically’ increasing my cardio to create a calorie deficit and therefoe ‘strip’ fat. I have totally revamped my eating for the remainder of the challenge to incorporate some of Dwayne’s Key’s to Success, these include using a zig / zag rotation for my daily calorie needs (3 days on deficit and 1 day on excess calories), tapering my meals more in the mrning less as the day goes on, removing all (OMG!) bread and other processed carbs and a smentioned ramping up my cardio whilst still doing 3 X resistance sessions a week. I have two 4 X day self imposed ‘boot camps’ planned between now and September 3. It’s really exciting and a bit scary to see the days flying by now.

In relation to the ’500′ step challenge Dwayne has video of me completing two sessions – session 1 – 500 X steps in 9mins 55 seconds, session 2 – 500 X steps in 9mins and 38 seconds. to be honest I’m not sure I can shave much more off that time and if anyone has done better than they have done well. I have a lot of exercise planned for the next few weeks I will keep you updated as Dwayne and I head out on our ‘boot camps’. Dave is trained by Dwayne Thomas

Update 1: Every day brings a new challenge. Work is extremely busy at the moment with an audit coming up. I feel totally knackered and its hard to keep an even balance with home life, work and working out. I am feeling tired and a bit fed up with it all. I know that I need to find a way to make all this work for me cause this is life. Guess this is all part of the learning curve.

Update 2: Have had an active weekend despite the weather. Feeling alot more motivated in the last few days, long may it last. Went and tried on a couple of dresses over the weekend ready for the prizegiving in chch and it was quite depressing. I am not going to let it get me down because I have to be proud of the fact that I actually tried them on in the first place. I never would have done it before as I would have let the fear get to me. They may not have fitted on saturday but one day they will.

Update 1: These past couple of weeks have been really tough for me. I have had a bad chest infection which affected my working out. Everything seemed to get me down and I felt so alone. My head was in a horrible place. I had a good chat with Roger tonight which I needed as it has been ages since we last cought up. I never want to go in that space again. Bring on the next 4 weeks:-))

Update 2: I am back Yippee. I had an amazing workout at Zeal at 7.30 this morning, it was awesome. Thank you so much Royal, Roger and everyone else who was there. So much fun but also hard work. After the last few weeks of feeling awful this morning brought me to where I need to be. Smiling face here for sure. Thank you so much.

A new take on exercise today, Not quite the weather for a run

Mel is trained by Tracey Butler Dempsey

Dave & Dwayne Stories

I had an unexpected day off work yesterday so I decided to get in some extra training, here’s how my day went:

8am – ran in my gumboots from my house in Casebrook to Pak N Save Northlands, 6km round trip in glorious snow. I fell twice but fortunately no one saw me

11am – Sue’s 500 step challenge – 7minutes 15secs!, my daughter used the stop watch on my phone to time me as I ran up and down the stairs in our two storey house, legs felt really heavy but it was a great test. I’m going to do this with my PT to make sure I have an ‘official’ time.

11:30am – 1 X 10 minute session on the stationary bike followed by intense cardio session 20 miniute session – set new record – 6.7 km, 156 calories, 89 rpm, 20.2 mph speed, 111 watts

3:30pm – regular Monday session with PT – intense circuit session in Dwayne’s garage, set against a background of snow in his driveway whilst it as pretty I had no time to admire it as Dwayne ‘hammered me’ as I was his only client for teh day, evryone else had cancelled due to the snow.

Dave is trained by Dwayne Thomas

Jimmy’s Side of the Story!

I have been training so hard I have had no time for the blog Strategising is also training I tell myself.

Wellington has turned on a beautiful sunny and windless day, even if it is still chilly. Running along the waterfront was great even if I had to dodge people and kids on bikes the whole way. Why take kids out cycling at lunch time when you have the rest of the day?

Still losing weight but the rapid loss has slowed down. Need to watch this.

Spin class this evening. Tuesday has become my cardio day. Wednesday is weights and strength. Enjoying my training at the moment as I can see and feel the results. Ran my first 6km run without stopping.

Jimmy is trained by Claudia Disney (check out her side of the story further down under the ‘PTs Talk You Up’ section)

Mel

Was a very cold morning, but Yah we did it. Well done to Angela Syme, Emma-Jane Wood and Shireen Spaull and Pepper Mel is trained by Jean Scott and is commenting on the Duathlon Jean held on Sunday.

Playing in The Snow Photo Mel Goes to the Mall

Had a fab trip to the Mall with my mum today. Shouted the kids to the movies (I’m the best mummy! ) then I had 2 hrs to cruise the mall. Went into all the clothes shops I wouldn’t have even walked in the door of before. Bought a wee top in stax Tried on lots, great boost to the ego as every thing I tried fitted. Oh I love clothes shopping now:) It haS probably been 20 years since I WAS ABLE TO SHOP IN A NORMAL SHOP! Happy! This Mel is trained by Tracey Butler Dempsey

Amanda’s about to Sprint

Time to start the sprint to the finish! my PT’s comments in this weeks news letter …… it has just kick my brain into a higher gear, rather than slacking off and cruising to the end. Thanks B I owe u so much, love the way you can get into my head, keep pushing those buttons. Amanda is trained by Bronwyn Adams Hooper.

Okay embarrasing moment to tell. When this challenge started I got a Catchfitness shirt sent to me from Broni and the team. I tried it on and it didn’t fit me and so I haven’t been able to wear it since. It was the biggest size I could get and so my husband ended up wearing it. Tonight I tried it on again, and whilst it is still snug, it actually does fit me. That is the story of my life and I want that to change. Need to keep working so it fits me even better.

Yesterday we went for the day in the snow at mount Ruapehu. What a workout! sliding down the mountain on my butt and then having to climb back up to do it all again! Great fun and felt good afterwards. Nice to spend the day with family and friends. This morning we did the 500 step challenge again. my time was 14.56 and hubby’s was 12.32. both improved on last time.

Since the beginning of the competition he has dropped 9 kg’s. Considering the time that has gone by since then this is not a lot but he’s an insulin dependent diabetic.

He’s so happy he can fit into some of his old jackets and shirts, and has already indicated that he’ll keep the momentum going even when the competition is finished. He’s seeing results and excited about it, and is planning on running a small 5 km race next week. Check out his blog on The Orange Sweatbox for his take on things (http://orangesweatbox.blogspot.com/).And oh I forgot to mention, James currently injects one third less insulin now that he’s exercising!

Bike Challenge Stories

Entrants were challenged to do a 10 km distance with bonuses for wearing an orange top and eating a potato or Em’s Power Cookie during the ride.

Deb

Man I’ve had an awesome day

Firstly off for my monthly visit to see my PT at Bodyworx in Hokitika, Michelle, who by the way is fantastic, she really pushed me today which was great, after a 5k warmup on the cycles and various exercises, onto the treadmill for a wee 1k run, and then the stepper just for fun lol, I had tired legs, but she convinced me to do the bike today. On the way home I phoned up my sister to arrange to meet later for the bike.

When I got home my daughter asked me to do some of her pamphlets with her, so I did and ended up running the last bit as it started to rain. Then off back to town for the bike. I was lucky enough to be able to borrow my brother in laws Jamis Durango 3 mountain bike which is super light, it was a bit big but heaps better than the bike I am used to, it had cleet pedals on so they were fun with normal shoes lol.

Off we set at 2.23pm complete with my orange fluro vest on, we went south down the Main Road, turned off and went up a back road, came out at the Paroa Hotel, stopped for the potatoes and then back off again. Half way back, we went off the road and onto the new mountain bike track that isn’t finished yet and biked thru sand and rocks nearly falling off several times, it was fun. We finally arrived back at 3.10pm just as the snow was beginning to fall. Back home again, realizing my daughter hadn’t finished her pamphlets (and had gone for a sleepover) so I had to go out again and do some more running about.

Wow I don’t think I’ll be able to walk tomorrow. Thanks Michelle for the motivation. Deb is trained by Michelle Morris from BodyWorx

Nicola

…so does just orange sleeves and a 30g Ems power cookie count? (yes !) Just finished a 20km bike with a 4km hike at the top where it started to snow, with my mate Lisa (Lisa wore a full orange top – part of the Challenge to gain extra points!). Nicola lives in Reefton and is trained by Elly in Christchurch

The Warriors

The Warriors (top) on a Sunday morning before the snow, rain and before 8am! and (below) eating potatoes , with a little help from an extra. “Thanks Elliot for helping the warriors complete there challenge” says Jean Scott, The Warriors trainer.

Shireen (one of the Warriors) ”Elliot he completed 15km in the time it took us to do 10km… about 45 minutes each (180 minutes) less orange tops (-7.5mins), less potatoes (-7.5mins), less mountain biking (-10mins) and less a non-team member – thanks Elliot (-2.5mins)… So 157.5 minutes.Pam was there earlier… Emma Jane has a beautiful orange t-shirt on under her jacket…”

Andrea

So after not having been on a bike in about 17 years I agreed to go on a 11km forrest track at McLeans Island with Bronwyn Adams-Hooper! The oddest thing about it was I actually enjoyed it and did it in 48 minutes which astounded me more that everyone else! So now to buy me a bike… Andrea is trained by Bronwyn Adams Hooper.

Ironman Distance Efforts

Liz

I’m loving the Ironman challenge and was just wondering. If I do the distance twice do I get two entries into the draw for the treadmill? (Liz is trained by Jean Scott and Yep we vote you do get two entries if you do the distance twice)

There have been a lot of times during this competition when I could quite easily have said “it’s all too hard”. I didn’t for lots of reasons but mostly because my PT (Dwayne Thomas) was so positive that I / we could get through the earthquakes, the destruction of the gym, losing all of my clothes in my ‘red stickered’ house and most recently breaking my fingers (photo attached) playing soccer. It didn’t matter what happened he always responded positively, for example I sent him a dejected text recently from hospital telling him I’d broken and dislocated my fingers and he replied “no problem, they tape up well!” I thought I had lost all chance of completing the challenge but he had other ideas. I’m not saying I always like him and if you were a fly on the wall as he tortures me with ‘one more set’ you would hear some pretty colourful language. Dwayne’s approach to health and fitness is comprehensive and whilst I struggled initially to understand why I had to keep eating more I eventually started to see the benefits. But I’m not doing the challenge for Dwayne I’m doing it for me!, that’s why I put up with the pain of lifting weights with the ‘McGyver like’ contraptions Dwayne invents so I can still train. I’m doing it for me, that’s why I get up every morning and do my specially designed 20 minutes of high intensity cardio (torture) that Dwayne says will strip the fat. I’m doing this for me, because believe it or not I’ve started to see my ab’s for the first time probably in my life! So as much as I curse Dwayne I can’t argue with the results. And now there are 46 days to go, I will be up early again tomorrow morning (as I was this morning, photo attached) on my stationary bike joining in with my fellow competitors in The Tour De France, I’m the one in the yellow jersey just out of picture J If like me you are a competitor in this challenge ‘go for it’ I will look forward to seeing you at the finish line and at the Awards Night, I’ll be the one sitting next to Dwayne, eating heaps.

Sue Slim

Yesterday we went for the day in the snow at mount Ruapehu. What a workout! sliding down the mountain on my butt and then having to climb back up to do it all again! Great fun and felt good afterwards. Nice to spend the day with family and friends. This morning we did the 500 step challenge again. my time was 14.56 and hubby’s was 12.32. both improved on last time. Sue is trained by Roger Symes

Just taken the kids to the Mall and stopped to say hi to Roger’s daughter Hannii. My eye caught the shop across from Munchkins because they were having a sale. I popped in for a peek and walked out grinning. I bumped into Bernice and showed her that I had bought 2 tops SIZE 14. Yee Haa. After this emotional and bad week this was the cherry on the cake for me. One of my goals was to be able to walk up mountains faster and today we conquered Mt Richardson and I was first to the top !!! It tried raining, gale force winds and snowing to stop us but no such luck. Made it up in 2 hours 15 minutes and down in 2 hours 35 mins. Great way to spend a cold blustery winter’s day in Canterbury. Now off to the spa to relax. Alison is trained by Bronwyn Adams Hooper.

Sue

Man, what a difference 20kg and some fitness makes! Just dug over the vege patch to start getting ready for planting. Easy peasy and so quick when you aint stopping for breathers every five mins! Sue is trained by Sheta Swinerd

The Classic Hits Crew

Sue

I think everyone is sick. I have had conjunctivitis and was not allowed to go to the gym. Now have had a cold since Friday but feeling a bit better now. Did 7km on the treadmill to see how I went. Not a bad effort.

Jolene

Myself and Sue Henderson did the Vet Stair Challenge this morning. It was freezing at 7.30am this morning and after I defrosed the Ute and picked up Sue we headed out to Massey. I only managed to shave 14 seconds off from my first attempt but my chest was conjested and I started coughing badly and with the taste of blood in my mouth, that made me feel worse. Sue did really well, thanks for the company…..shortly after Jolene writes…Well it is official I have the FLU. I was trying to pretend that it was not happening but after yesterday it hit me hard. Just cleaned the house to the best of my ability. Now my bed is calling me, but not for long as I have to take kids to birthday parties later. Oh the joys. I just hope that this doesn’t last for long as still have so much to do like work and working out.

Thank you for this 20 week challenge. I took another look at my life on Monday after I wrote of my Car on Black Ice. I was really stupid and hope after people see this please slow down I was traveling at 70kmph on a straight bend and it happens. I saw my life flash before my eyes.
Woke up this morning and thought, “HOW GREAT IS LIFE!!!” Felt very grateful that I am so sore because it means that I’ve had a great training week, and there’s more to come. It meant I was able to get out of bed and enjoy another week fitter and looking great. And I was very grateful that I have amazing friends making this journey with me!!!!!
Sue

I just jumped on the treadmill while watchin the origin game.. initially thought I’d go til 300cal. Put it on manual just in case I decided to keep walkin while I watched. Well, after a 5 min warm up i started a gentle jog. 22 mins later I hit my 300cal burned, but thought, I feel good, I’ll keep goin. I walked 5min, then thought bugga it, I can jog again. At 49m03s i hit 5km. Back in Feb, that 5km took me 1hr8min – thats nearly 20mins longer!! Ive admitted to myself for a few weeks that this “I can’t run that long at a time” was purely a mental block. Tonight I proved that to myself. I can and it was easy! Oh..and 547 cals burned to boot! Proud much? Hell yes. Sue is trained by Sheta Swinerd

Updates from weeks 11 and 21

Wendy’s Weight Drops Again

Well this 20 weeks has gone so fast, Weigh and measure this week fantastic results THANKS to my I can’t wait to see what I will look like at the end of the 30 weeks BRING IT ON!!!! Wendy is trained by Roger Symes

Amanda Starts a Running Group

I’VE FOUND AWAY TO KEEP RUNNING. I am honest and I know my weakness, I’ll let myself down before others. So I’ve started a small running group I call LETS GET RUNNING, Every saturday morning 7.45am we get together and have a wee run around Darfield. I’ve got no excuse to say in bed Now! Amanda is trained by Bronwyn Adams Hooper

Petite Pascale

My fitness re-testing this morning went SO well, I decided to pop into a shop on my way to a meeting to buy a new winter dress – size 6!!! wheeee! Pascale a trainer herself is also trained by Tracey Butler Dempsey

Sue Goes Shopping and Makes Mango Sauce

Finally relented and bought new clothes! Got a couple a few weeks ago but didnt want to get too much just yet – thought I could make do for winter and get new summer wardrobe. Wanted to wait “a few more kilos” but my work clothes are getting Ridiculous. And my rule was “COLOUR” – got some black pants of course, but my tops all had to have colour…strange but FUN after a lifetime of black.

I went out to dinner Saturday night and chose a baked salmon dish with a mango, ginger and coriander sauce (and I told the waiter to skip the rice). It was devine, although was sweetened a bit too much for me. So, tonight I tried to recreate the sauce with reasonable success: Peel and puree 1 mango, then I added about 1/2 tsp grated fresh ginger, 1/2 tsp of the coriander in the tubes from the deli, 1/2 tsp of chilli, whizzed it thruthe magic bullet, and zapped in the microwave to drizzle over my chicken. Was awesome! it’d be yum on scallops or prawns too – both low fat/high protein options for lunches/dinners Tried another one tonight – I pureed a pear, then added about 1/2 tsp fresh ginger and zapped it. Poured on my fish and it was yummo! Getting the idea that sauces may have been my downfall in the past?? Trying to replace them with healthier versions.

Deb Does Four Tonne

We, Glenys and I, completed the One Tonne challenge West Coast Style this morning with Michelle Morris, my PT from Bodyworx Gym in Hokitika.

We were going for a total of 2 tonne each, but ended up doing over 4 tonne each with a grand total of 10140kg doing a mix of Bench Press, Leg Press, Tricep Press, Bicep Curls, Lat Pulldowns, it was fantastic. This was a great challenge, bring it on.

Great big thanks to Michelle, my PT and Glenys who spurred me along, was great to meet you.

Here’s a pic of me doing the bench press, and I will get Glenys to send in some pics off her camera.

Marjie Trains with The Crusaders

Hi guys. Here we are at 10 weeks (or 7 weeks for people like me who enter at the last minute), so I thought I’d do as Di suggested and send an update of how I am doing. I am happy to say that, despite a head cold and the recent earthquake disruption, I have mostly managed to stay on track and keep focussed with my eating and exercise. I am feeling much fitter and have lost almost 5kgs, with increased lean muscle and less body fat – all good!

I never thought when I started the 20 Week Challenge that I would be training with the Crusaders, but that is where I found myself at Pioneer pool the other week! (Actually I was a little too intimidated to get in the lap pool while they were in it, but I was one of the first to swim in their lanes once they got out!) Those guys can make a lot of noise!

Roll on the next 10 weeks…

Nicola pulls out of Netball

Have made the big decision to not continue with my netball due to Plantar Fasciitis. I will gradually go back to running, as it was good before the netball. Back on track for the next ten weeks now! Nicola is trained by Bronwyn Adams Hooper

Liz Enters the Auckland Half Marathon

So have decided to bite the bullet and start training for the Auckland half marathon even though the specialist isn’t too sure I’ll be doing it. Today was DAY 1. Didn’t think it would be that hard to add 13 minutes to my run and run 70 min the thought of running that far almost prevented me from doing. I’m really hoping I can get my head around doing it before I talk myself out of it!!! Elizabeth is trained by Jean Scott.

PTs Talk You Up

Tracey does Testing

I’ve been having much fun this week weighing, measuring and testing my lovely 20 Weekers. They have all made such huge improvements….and there’s still 9 weeks to go! And I’m sure there’s some stiff competition for them amongst the other entrants – you are superstars, all of you.

Classic Hits Crew

Jo Lean

I have just completed my swim challenge. Wendy very kindly did my timing. I swam 50 lengths (1.250km) in 33 minutes and 40 seconds. I didn’t have a swiss ball to gain bonus points so I hope this is ok. Roger was in Wellington so he was unable to swim with me. I could not believe that I actually did this in that amount of time. I am thankful to Wendy for doing my time. All the swimming training has paid off. I think I will carry on swimming every week

My face is sore from smiling so much after my weigh in and measures with Roger. Waist I have lost 31.5cm, Hips 21cm and thighs 12cm. Roger showed me my before photos and I felt sick. I cannot believe the change that 20 weeks has done, and to think that I have another 10 weeks to achieve more. I am one happy JO Lean. Thank you so much to everyone who has been with me through this.

Went to the mall when I past Glassons and I went in. I saw this beautiful top which was a size 16 and I thought “it would never fit me” well to my surprise it did. I bought it and I felt like a kid hyped up on lollies. Other times I have gone in and there has never been anything to fit me. It felt so good to go into a shop and put on something that fits without the struggle and disappointment.

Jolene is trained by Roger Symes

Sue Slim

I watched the biggest loser the other night and they had to do 500 step ups to get into the challenge, so I decided that I was going to give it a go. I completed 500 step ups at home in the time of 17.08minutes. I challenge others to give it a go and beat my time. My husband did it in 16.17minutes. Have a go!

I have had to work out my nutrition plan pretty much on my own with some guidance from Freya which has been great. It has been a learning curve about what foods are good for me and how much I can have with all the exercise I am doing. The weight may not be coming off as fast as I would want but I am getting there and so proud of my efforts. This is a lifestyle now for me, going way beyond the 30 weeks.

Can I wipe the smile off my face…. NO! I had my fitness test and I was actually looking forward to it. Me looking forward to anything exercise, WOW what a mind shift I have made. It was a great result and I am very proud of my myself for what I have done.

Sue’s Support

I am Susan’s husband. A very proud one at that. She has achieved so much in such a short time frame that who knows what she will look like at the finish. I am doing this challenge with her and its great to be able to support each other as we excercise and eat our way to our new lives. Keep up the awesome work hunni. Go team Sue Slim!!!!

Congrats also to Margaret R who wins a lucky Lotto ticket for the July 2nd draw, for being the first entrant to do it.

The Good, the Bad and Inspirational

Glenys Loses 18kgs…”I never want to go back….”

Had another awesome workout at the Gym this morning. Charlotte, my PT, got me on the Stepper Machine wearing a back pack loaded with 18kgs in weight. 18kgs is how much weight I have lost so far (19 weeks). Didn’t take long for the heart rate to go up & the sweat to start pouring!! I can’t believe that I was carrying around that much weight every day. I never want to go back to that again. A great eye-opener and motivator. Hope everyone is having a good week, and keep smiling! Glenys is trained by Charlotte at BodyWorx

Liz -Warrior and Ironman Distance Girl

Who else is loving this Challenge i.e. doing the Ironman distance. Road 60k’s on Sun and ran 21.1 k’s last week. Just need to keep that up and hit the pool at some point! (Liz, above, at Adrenalin Forest with her trainer Jean Scott and the other Warriors)

Amazing Amanda describes her most perfect moment

The most perfect moment so far….. for 1st time in over 7 years i’m under 80kg …….. 79.9kg and it feels amazing. Amanda is trained by Bronwyn’s Adam Hooper

Sue Gets Teary

Wouldn’t normally be someone who gets overly emotional…but had to admit I just had a wee cry (with pride) reading back through all the weekly updates on the 20weeks page to week one. Havent we all done so very well thus far. Jolene, Wendy, Susan – the changes in you ladies since the first photos are amazing, and I cant wait to see what Margaret looks like at the end cos her week 9 comparison was pretty darned impressive. Big Ups to you all Sue is trained by Sheta Shewind

Pascale Grows Younger

Just redid my “real age” test and i’ve gained another two years of life since starting the comp! yeehaar

The Classic Hits Crew

Susan – 20 Years Later!

Yesterday I went on a girls shopping day in Wellington. For the first time in over 20 years, I got into a size 18 dress. I didnt believe that it would even fit me… I was at the top end of the sizes, 26 generally…now I fit an 18 … It makes me so emotional to think that I AM doing and what I WILL achieve. Susan is trainer by Freya Thomson

Jo Lean has Lost Her Son!

I HAVE LOST MY SON …..in weight and more! Dylan my son is 7 years old and I have lost his weight. It hit like a bolt of lightening this morning when I was talking to the guys at work when we were talking about how much weight I had lost. The realisation that I have lost more than what my son weighs is so exciting. I cannot wait to see what the next 10 weeks will bring and what I can achieve in that time. Jo Lean is trained by Roger.

I had four exercises – bench press, lat pull down, squats, weighted step. There was 7 in the group and they shifted a total of 25000kilo’s! The least was 1920 and the most was 5093! I watched Amanda with 2 x 10 weight plates do 50 squats with out a break!”

Then I have another 10 weeks BRING IT ON!!!
Susan

Update 1: Back into the workouts with my trainer now I am back from holidays. We are increasing the intensity of which I found out last night at the start of my session. Feeling it today, at least I know I am alive!

Update 2:Was feeling abit frustrated and beaten up with life over the past couple of days but had my workout this afternoon at the gym with Freya and worked out all the anger and it was great. Nothing like a hard workout to put you in a good mood. Came home feeling so good, I decided to walk 5km on treadmill. Yeeha. Susan is trained by Freya Thomson

Jolene

Had an intense Hybrid training at 7.30 this morning with Royal Bryan from Zeal. I never though 30 seconds could be so long. I was certainly feeling the burn by the time the session had ended. Unfortunately Roger was in Wellington so could not join in on the fun, but he was missed. But this week was certainly better than my last week. Bring on week 20, and after that the rest of the 10 weeks. Cant believe how time flys when you have fun. Jolene is trained by Roger Symes
